On Saturday, 4/23, PCTVEA hosted an event at the High Mountain Park Preserve.  A group of over 2 dozen teachers, students and parents gathered at the trail head on WPU’s campus for a park clean up activity.  Over 3 ½ miles of hilly terrain were traversed as the group headed eastward on the red and yellow trails, reaching the High Mountain Summit along the way.  With M. O’Neill leading the way, and L. Owens performing the vital role of sweeper, the 2 able bodied sexagenarians successfully guided the group to the edge of the park in Franklin Lakes, where a bus awaited to transport them back to the disembarkation point.  After getting a healthy workout, and collecting several bags of trash from the trails, the group relaxed on the park grounds to enjoy pizza, sandwiches and drinks purchased from Neil’s Pizza of Wayne.  Thanks to our local union and the willingness of our members to participate, our community celebrated Earth Day in a fitting way.

Larry Hurtado, PCTVEA Vice President, was also present at the event and provided logistical support.  He hiked the initial portion of the trail, serving as a conduit to civilization, and doubled back to rendezvous with the group at lunchtime, food in hand, to ensure a most successful event.

Keep your eyes peeled for next year’s upcoming events and get involved! Contact Mark O’Neill (moneill@pcti.tec.nj.us) for more information.
